ASHTA VEERATTANAM



நாடும் நகரமும் நற்றிருக் கோயிலும்
தேடித் திரிந்து சிவபெரு மான்என்று
பாடுமின் பாடிப் பணிமின் பணிந்தபின்
கூடிய நெஞ்சத்தைக் கோயிலாக் கொள்வனே– THIRUMOOLAR

The places where Lord Siva appeared and did valorous execution in eight different places to teach lesson and destroyed the evils is named as “Ashta Veerattana Sthalangal”




1.THIRUVIRKUDI

STHALA PURANAM

Jalandran was a demon king who became very strong
All the three worlds were captured by him. He destroyed the devalokas and captured all the Gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Indra and others.

Lord Shiva took the form of samhara moorthy and created a chakrayudam from the ripples of water and destroyed the demon Jalandaran.

The place where the demon was destroyed has been enshired by the loads shiva as Veeratteswarar and the presidingdeity is also called as Jalandara Samhara Moorthy’

Lord Shiva later on gave his discus (chakram) to Vishnu, for which Vishnu offered one of his eyes in lieu of the 1000th flower in worship to Shiva to obtain the cosmic. The place where Lord Vishnu worsjipped Shiva to get the cosmic discus is Tiruveezhimizhalai near the above mentioned Virkudi.
Jalandran's wife Brinda is believed to have been a great devotee of Vishnu, who gave her the boon that she would appear as the Tulsi plant and would remain forever dear to him. Supporting this story is the sthala vriksham of this temple, or the temple plant, which is the Tulsi.

How to reach: This sivasthalam temple is located near Nannilam (Thiruvarur - Mayilaaduthurai route) about 10 Kms. from tiruvarur.

2. THIRU KURUKKAI

Pathigam Thirunavukarasar
Sthala vruksham

STHALA PURANAM

This is one of the Attaveerattana Sthalam of God Shiva. God Shiva is believed to have burnt alive Manmadhan at this Sthalam by opening his third eye in the forehead.
